I would like to assure everyone that Aizen's closure of the senkaimon has been verified and is effective. There's no need to test it by taking a running start and crashing headfirst into a barrier, as at least two of you have tried already.

Shinigami remain on-assignment and in the living world; they will continue to do their jobs, so I suggest that everyone still in Soul Society focus on doing yours.

[Friends and family filter]

Ichigo and Kensei, I had planned to retrieve some fresh reading material from the living world in order to make your convalescence more tolerable, but it seems I'll have to make do with the manga I have on hand. I'll stop by this afternoon to drop it off.

Renji, you owe me dinner.

It goes without saying that none of you are responsible for Aizen's actions, if you were stupidly considering feeling guilty.

Seireitei has been officially stabilized, for now, though there's plenty of work to be done. The extra duty on the updated schedules is mandatory, but so are the off-hours; we've lost a few people, and we don't need to lose any more to sheer exhaustion.

I'm requesting that other divisions share their current statuses and injured rosters so we can arrange adjusted assignments to the living world in order to compensate. The souls there still need to be looked after.

What a wonderful birthday.

[Private to Captain Ukitake]

Sir, please look after yourself. I've been keeping track of how little you've slept worried. You especially should take the time to rest now that we've enough time to relax.

All members of the Thirteenth division are to report to the main office for immediate reassignment. Yes, even if it's your day off.

[Filtered to vice-captains and up]

Let's keep each other updated as to what's happening.

[Private to Ichigo]

I know you're not under my authority anymore, but I'd appreciate it if you let me know what you're doing. Something's going on out there.

And that's just in this office. This move is going to take forever. People I know who can lift a lot, prepare to be drafted.

After performing our duties in the living world under the new procedures for around a week, I thought it prudent to issue a status update, based on squad leader reports given to Captain Ukitake and our own observations.

Once we were able to reach the living world, the main problem was the large number of souls that could not be sent here by our 'substitutes'. Instead of just being a bureaucratic headache, large concentrations of Pluses served as lures for Hollows; this was and continues to be a problem, especially in the most densely populated cities.

Many officers, especially those with experience being stationed in the living world, are fully capable of defeating Hollows without shikai, even if they cannot be purified, but the more powerful Hollows present some difficulty. Additionally, if we devote more resources to fighting instead of soul transfer, the backup won't get much smaller and will continue to attract more Hollows than usual.

Thanks to the quick work of the Twelfth Division, the manual escorts through the dangai are proceeding mostly without incident, but they're slower. To be completely frank, it's much easier to perform konso on an unwilling soul than it is to drag them through an ominous-looking tunnel. When it comes down to making a choice, that is technically an option, but it's not the ideal choice, and it still slows us down.

Right now, our plan is to continue focusing on the soul transfers and dispatch as many squads as possible to hold back the Hollows until we can reach a balance point once more. If our fellow officers and captains have ideas for procedure improvements, please direct them to me and Captain Ukitake will review them.

[Private to Ichigo]

This has nothing to do with the rest of what I wrote. Mostly nothing. I saw your father the other day, and I came away wondering if you really ought to have a talk with him.

Officers, please be aware that I'll be out of the office frequently this week. There are a number of tasks outside the division grounds I need to oversee, but I'll be reachable by hell butterfly.

Kurosaki Ichigo will likewise be away from his usual duties. Not with me. He's volunteered for a mission in the living world. Sorry, Renji, you'll have to get into trouble on your own for once.

[Filtered to Ichigo, Orihime and Renji]
Let me know if this filter works. I accepted a phone from Urahara, but I don't entirely trust the greedy bastard, and I want to make sure his extra security measures really work.

Also, Inoue...if you've got time, perhaps I could visit sometime soon? I don't want to impose, of course. But it has been a while.

I'd like to report that earlier today, three unseated officers of the Thirteenth and myself encountered the Sixth Espada Grimmjow Jeagerjaques in Rukongai, East Third. It appears he was seeking a fight out of boredom, not on any mission on behalf of Aizen or Ichimaru, but we can't be certain. I managed to persuade him to leave Soul Society, but I recommend that everyone remain extra-alert in case of further encroachments.

[Private to Ichigo]
He was looking for you in particular. Watch yourself.

After receiving a butterfly from Captain Unohana early this morning, I'd like to announce that the quarantine on the Thirteenth Division is officially lifted. Officers may now come and go as they please--however, I expect all of you to exercise good judgment, and if you do manifest any symptoms of illness, go to the Fourth immediately.

Finally.

[In the morning, sitting at the top of Captain Ukitake's inbox stack will be an annotated copy of the Academy's quarterly report; it has been thoroughly marked up in a system devised by Rukia to alert the captain-commander of what important items he should devote his attention to. Of significant note is the rate at which shinigami-in-training have learned the names of their zanpakuto and manifested shikai, which has dropped to a level never seen before in recent memory; further investigation is necessary.

This report is soon forwarded to all other captains and vice-captains.]

[To all members and staff of the Thirteenth division, notifications copied to other captains and vice-captains shortly thereafter]

Given the worrying news about a second illness-related fatality, Thirteenth division is on quarantine as of now. No one leaves or enters the grounds without express permission from Captain-Commander Ukitake or myself. This includes all officers, seated or unseated, and all staff and representatives.

We are all likely to be fine, but this is a necessary precaution.

I understand that a late training session on our division's grounds last night turned into something of a party. As your vice-captain, I'm not against forms of stress-relief, but I am against party games that result in officers' pants being left at the scene.

Whoever these belong to, you can come and claim them in the main office.

After further checking, Captain Ukitake confirmed to me that the mission will take place tomorrow, as previously estimated. I trust you're both ready; I'll see you then.

Captain Ukitake has informed me that there are some difficulties with the garganta. Since the last thing we want is to go and be unable to return, we're to stand down for the moment--but stand by, because we don't want to wait longer than we have to.

All right. It seems returning to Hueco Mundo and taking Inoue ourselves instead of begging for scraps of her time is inevitable. Ishida and Nel, too—even if Captain Ukitake hadn't included them as objectives, it would be too dangerous to leave known allies in the hands of the Arrancar.

Let's form a plan.

A quick notice to the Thirteenth—I'm sure word has circulated by now, but the large, quiet man who recently moved into the barracks is a friend of Substitute Shinigami Kurosaki's from the living world, not a rookie; I expect all of you to treat our guest with courtesy.

Captain, I've submitted the report on those from our division who collaborated in the kidnapping of Yadomaru Lisa. It's as thorough as I could make it, but if the need for future questioning and reports arises, I'll be happy to do it. This act will have serious consequences.

Let that be a lesson for all of you.

[Private to Ichigo]

Up for your lessons now that things have calmed down a bit? We can't have shinigami in the Thirteenth who might blow themselves up, after all.

With quieter days comes normalcy, I suppose. Vice-captains; have any of you caught wind of a sort of...I suppose it would qualify as inter-divisional rivalry? I was on rounds last night and caught a group of our newest rookies preparing a set of banners and kidou traps to be used as pranks in one of the meeting rooms. After some questioning, they indicated that their graduating class, spread throughout most of the Goetei, is having a competition to prove whose is the best. It seemed rather good-natured, and to be honest, I think some lighthearted activities can't hurt things.

However, I confiscated the kidou traps, as they could prove harmful.

Go Division Thirteen.

[Private to Ichigo]

Let me know when you're ready to begin kidou lessons. I have some time in my schedule coming up soon.

[Private to Most Honored Elder Sibling]

A note to anyone who might be looking for me today—I am in, but I've moved to the spare office with no windows for today, and I'm keeping the lighting low, so you may not realize it's occupied. Any squad leaders who need to speak with me should look for me there.

God, my head hurts.

[Filtered to all captains and vice-captains]

This may not need saying, as I know you are all people of character, but Kurosaki Ichigo has been one of us since his first appearance in Soul Society, and he has had his Hollow under his control for nearly as long. I can personally vouch for his loyalties and abilities. If he hadn't become a Vaizard, I wouldn't be here now.

As with Captain Ukitake, I am open to questions if you don't feel comfortable speaking directly to Ichigo. Although I would hope you do.

[Private to Captain Ukitake]

My apologies for the impromptu relocation, sir. But on a more important matter, it seems Inoue will be making another visit to Seireitei later this week. I would recommend she be debriefed regarding the experiments that Szayel Apollo has been performing on her abilities. Aside from increasing our own knowledge, it's important that we know what the enemy knows about her powers.

[Private to Ichigo]

I don't really remember much about getting home after the bar, but I didn't wake up rolled into an alley with no money, so I'm assuming the credit for that is yours.

Thank you.

Note to members of Division 13 or other officers who may have business with us while the Captain is overseeing the taishu—

Apologies for my lateness this morning. A few notes were left in my absence, and yes, I'll be overseeing division matters while Captain Ukitake and the others are occupied with choosing the future path of the Gotei. Squad leaders, this doesn't mean slacking off on drills—I'll be circulating later this afternoon to make sure. We may already have a captain, but everyone still needs to be in top shape.

[Private]

I dreamed of him again last night. I thought I was done with that—it's been months—but I suppose I can't ever escape what happened there. All I can do is protect the captain from having to know about it. I couldn't bear if he were hurt by it—and I took care of it, so there's no reason he will be.

Dreaming of that night always throws me off-balance. I'll be glad when this day is done.

I'm sure you've noticed by now, but things are a bit hectic at the Thirteenth right now. (Speaking of which, Ichigo, please continue with your usual drill schedule, but as we figure out what kind of transition will need to be made, I may need your assistance.) And that's not even considering the impromptu celebration that was thrown upon Captain-Commander Ukitake's election and my head is still spinning a little. Please forgive me if I'm sparse company, at least until the New Year.

If you do need to see me before then, highly-caffeinated tea would be welcome.

Yes, the snow is very pretty, but officers should remember that injuries sustained during a snowball fight are not grounds for medical dismissal of duties.

[Intended to be private to Captain Ukitake; inadvertantly placed on allies-only filter]

Sir, I realize we're in a precarious position, but there must be something we can do about this joke of a governing body. The former Central 46 ma have had its flaws, but this is an abomination! If we allow Arrancar to rule over us, we may as well blunt our swords altogether!
