Captain Ukitake, after taking some time to recover, I've finished the report on our expedition to Hueco Mundo and left it on your desk. I tried to make it as informative as possible, but please let me know if you have further questions.

Additionally, one of our officers currently on assignment in the living world has reported strange disturbances with the hell butterflies she's sent, both as messengers and konso. It's as if there's some barrier or instability in the spiritual particles of the area that's preventing proper transmission to Soul Society. With permission, I'd like to take a team to investigate the matter myself.

I know you've got Nel to deal with now, but if you can afford the time, I'd like you to be part of that team. This sort of problem is well out of your area of expertise—I think it would do you some good to be part of solving it. But it's up to you.

I've been trying to keep a brave face for my friends and focus on the fact that Inoue's freedom is what really counts, but all that planning and secrecy and for what, if they didn't want her anyway? How effective are we if our greatest efforts mean nothing to them?

Strange times lately. It feels as though winds of change are sweeping through Soul Society, but everything's staying firmly in its place.

I suppose we'll just have to help the wind along.

Arisawa-san, if you need to see Ichigo, he's practically comatose in a guest room in my home. The idiot wouldn't know how to take care of himself in his own quarters. I have a feeling he may not be up for practice, though.

As a request—could seated officers who have dealt with the unusually large influx of Hollows issue status reports?

[Private]
I anticipated Captain Ukitake's support in the transition, but taking up the position of Vice-Captain has been easier than I expected. Kaien-dono's presence is still very much here, in every action I take that would have been his...but it's a comfort more than a hindrance. I may never live up to his example, but just trying is making me a better officer. He did say he left his heart with me. Perhaps this is part of that.

I may go visit his grave in a few days. I know his body isn't there and never was, but I still want to. I'd rather think that any remaining essence would linger near his home, not where Aizen's twisted creation brought him. I'll think about it.

[Filtered away from all arrancar and Aizen-allies]

Today was my day off from division responsibilities, so I took a walk through some of the nearer districts of the Rukongai. There were children there, living and playing happily, with no idea of the conflict Aizen's caused. To be envied, really. Some of them must have been more recently dead, because they were celebrating a holiday-Americanized, I think-that seemed similar to Obon. They also had some handmade masks as costumes; rather crude, really, but sweet all the same.

It would be nice to retreat into their sort of innocence, even though I never really had it. But none of us are so lucky now.
